JESENÍK
Jeseník Spa was established and became renowned later on thanks to Vincenz Priessnitz. Upon his model, dozens of hydrotherapy centres in the whole Europe were established. He was born in October 4, 1799 as the sixth child of a small holder František and his wife Marie Terezie Eva Priessnitz in the small municipality called Gräfenberg, 2.5 km far from Frývaldov (Jeseník). When he was 12 years old, his father went blind, so Vincenz was to carry the burden of all the farm works. Therefore naturally, only little time remained for school. As a consequence, writing has been his weak point for all his life. He took Nature as his teacher and forest, mountains, springs and also animals, which he carefully observed, as his textbooks. He was gifted with extraordinary intuition, observing talent and excellent memory, thanks to which he learned about the special effects of water. Besides, he was able to put his thoughts into practice in the right time and place. One of the stories about him says that when he was secretly observing the hurt buck that cured its hurt leg by baths in the forest spring well. Experiences of the curative effect of the cold spring water he tested on himself when he fell under the wheels of the fully loaded rack cart when he was 16 years old. The called healer found that Vincenz had broken ribs and other serious injuries and described his condition as critical, in the best case the boy would remain handicapped for the rest of his life.
Vincenz also in this case relied on curative power of water. He aligned his ribs back in their place and he was putting patiently cold bandage on his chest. This curing has lasted for one year but at the end, Priessnitz was fit again. Information about it spread quickly and people considered it a miracle. When he cured in a similar way the servant of his neighbour and helped also many other people from surroundings, the first patients started to come to Gräfenberg. He was curing dislocated arms and legs, haemorrhage and broken bones, later also rheumatism, gout, chronic constipation, liver and stomach diseases. Soon, his new treatment method and its results became world renowned.
